Philips gets into Li-Fi through stealth acquisition

February 09, 2017 // By Julien Happich
LEDs Magazine recently reported the acquisition of French startup Luciom by Philips Lighting, for an undisclosed sum. Luciom which was developing Li-Fi based products could accelerate Philips’ offering in light-based communications.

Acquired at the end of 2016, the French company and all of its eight employees have been relocated to Philips Lighting headquarters in Eindhoven.

Philips is expected to invest in the Luciom technology in a push toward commercializing it. Once Li-Fi takes hold, it could complement Wi-Fi in large part by opening much more frequency to Internet use, without interference issues.
